Doris Buckingham
March 28, 1923   -   November 16 , 2013

Obituary posted by : Albion Buckingham ,  son
Person Description:
Doris Buckingham, of Abington PA, died Saturday, Nov 16, 2013 at the age of 90 with her son Albion by her side at home. Born March 28, 1923 in Bridgeport, CT she was the only child of the late Albion and Clara Buckingham. Formerly Mrs.William E.Garten, she raised Albion instilling the love of family and friends into his life. Doris was a member of the Willow Grove Bible Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance and looked to Jesus as the bedrock and only hope of forgiveness and eternal life. Her life was focused on serving others. Doris led efforts to sponsor Cambodian refugees, teach them ESL and help them start a new life. Directing children’s church ministry, she sought to guide little ones into knowledge of the scriptures and relationship with Christ.

A love of the outdoors was a constant theme of her life. As a volunteer at the Visitor’s Center of Pennypack Restoration Trust in Huntingdon Valley for over twenty years, she helped others enjoy creation. Camping was one of her loves. She tented well into her sixties then transitioned to a popup and later to a motor home. Doris surprised many people at 90, she was always eager for a trip to the N.J. shore or Florida. Becoming a snowbird in the early 1990’s, she joined other family members on Florida’s west coast until returning to Abington in 2008 to be cared for by her son.

Doris earned an Associates Degree in Child Development from Penn State University while in her 70’s. In 1985 she and Albion became foster parents to Raymond Robert Barksdale, raising Raymond for over four years. Recently she had the joy of being re-united and receiving his gratitude just before her passing into glory.

With a deep love for her country and it’s founding, a patriot at heart, her spirit of faithfulness, love of the truth and desire for justice will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her son Albion Buckingham and foster son Raymond Barksdale.

“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by one man came death by one man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death”.
I Corinthians 15:19-26

For Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon Thee. Ps 86:5
